1 Killed, at Least 10 Injured in Shooting Near Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade: Police

Multiple people were shot and two armed suspects are in custody after gunshots rang out during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade on Wednesday afternoon

One person has been killed and at least ten people were injured after gunshots rang out toward the end of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade on Wednesday afternoon, Stacey Graces, the city’s police chief, said at a Wednesday press conference.

According to Graves, two armed suspects are in custody. She said “10 to 15” people were injured in the shooting in addition to the fatal victim.

Graves said the shooting began on the west side of the city’s Union Station immediately after a rally honoring the Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl on Sunday. Police immediately took two people into custody.

Police don’t know what led up to the shooting, said Graves.

Video on social media showed dozens and dozens of officers converging to the right side of the stage and running inside Union Station with their weapons drawn.

Loud pops rang out as soon as the confetti began falling as the players left the stage, according to a PEOPLE reporter on the ground at the parade. Witnesses at the scene said they saw multiple people bleeding, although it was not clear what the source of their injuries was.

“Chaos has broken out at the end of the Chiefs Super Bowl parade,” local News Press-NOW sports director Jacob Mikeil wrote on X, sharing video of authorities rushing into the train station next to the stage.

The Kansas City Police Department said beforehand that 34 “local, state and federal law enforcement agencies will be assisting KCPD for the celebration.”

“It’s very disheartening,” U.S. Rep. Mark Alford said on CNN. “We should be able to come together in situations like this and celebrate victories, not have to deal with a shooting.”

The department put out a notice urging fans to take caution at the event and asked for their help “to make the parade enjoyable and safe.”

A woman who attended the parade with a group of friends told PEOPLE, “I saw two people bleeding on the ground and we got out of there as fast as we could run.”

Another woman, who attended the parade with her husband and daughter, said, “We heard the shots and I grabbed my daughter’s hand and ran with the group. When people start running like that, I knew it was something.”

Two girls who attended the parade were seen crying and comforting each other while they tried to reach their mothers.

Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes tweeted, “Praying for Kansas City.”
